About Humboldt Station Landfill

Humboldt Station coal combustion waste (CCW) landfill is located along the north side of the Des Moines River near its junction with the East Fork Des Moines River. From 1950 to 1978, the 4.5 acre Humboldt Station landfill accepted approximately 2,241,000 cubic feet of CCW from Humboldt Generating Station which, itself began operation in 1950. The landfill was capped and seeded in late 1999 with three feet of soil. Coal ash extends 11 feet beneath the capped surface. Annual water quality reports from 2008 to 2013 show a trend of manganese concentrations exceeding EPA's lifetime health advisory standard. The city of Humboldt operates a water well 3.4 miles north-north west of the landfill.
